STORIES FROM THE ROYALTON BANNER

January 2   Gilmer’s Alley Open’s:   Billy Gilmer’s bowling alley opened to the public Monday evening and the fans have enjoyed some excellent sport toppling the pins.  The Alley is one of the best manufactured, regulation size and style and the balls, made of hard rubber are unexcelled.  The most painstaking care has been used in installing the new ally and it is guaranteed to give satisfaction to all bowlers.   Billy is having the box ball alley moved to the new quarters and will connect it with large one.  He is better prepared then ever to care for his lunch customers and is getting in al larger stock of confectionery, cigars, and tobaccos then ever.

January: The rates at the Commercial Hotel are raised to $2 a day.   M. Newman Prop.

January 9:  On Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock Manager Rhoda turned the switch that connected the local lighting and power system with the producing plant in Little Falls and the Royalton lines are now loaded with “Juice” during the entire twenty-fours of the day continuously.

April 24:  The passing rail road track is lengthening by 500 feet so trains don’t block the crossing and an automatic bell system is installed at the rail road crossing.

May 15:  15 new lights have been added to the streets of Royalton.  No dark corner in the business and main residence sections.

May ?? The Rudd Lumber Company moved from lower town to across the Rail Road tracks and the entire building will be covered in steel to prevent it catching on fire.

July will see the new creamery open.

Sept. 11:  The W.J. Broker Saloon was entered by burglars late Sunday night and about $5 in Buffalo nickels and several bottles of whiskey taken.  The job was apparently done by two men who broke a window in the alley to gain entrance to the place.  Parties known as John Drexel and Shorty who have been employed by a local St. Cloud contractor are suspected of the deed, as both bought tickets to St. Paul early Monday morning, paying for them in Buffalo nickels.  Drexel has an unsavory reputation, having been released from the St. Cloud Reformatory a few months ago, where he served a term for grand larceny in Clay County.   No trace of the men has been found to date, but they will probably be apprehended later.  No effect was made to open the safe in the Broker place.
